Seamanship II Test 1 Practice

Vessel Traffic Service provides ongoing traffic monitoring, advisories, and routing guidance in busy coastal waters. When it isn’t available, you must rely on locally authoritative guidance to navigate safely: coast pilots, who are licensed professionals boarded to guide ships through harbor approaches, channels, and tricky coastal areas; and sailing directions, official publications that describe routes, hazards, currents, and the regulatory framework for a given area. Together these give you the local knowledge, recommended tracks, and procedures you need to follow to avoid collisions and grounding.

Why the other ideas don’t replace VTS: AIS shows where other vessels are and what they’re doing, but it doesn’t manage traffic or provide authoritative routing or hazard advisories. GPS gives position data but no information about nearby traffic, dangers, or recommended passages. Radio contact with port authorities can help, but it doesn’t substitute for the specialized, on-the-water guidance and published routes provided by pilots and sailing directions.
